Something of a southern thing, red velvet cake has become a Florida tradition. Its bright red colour caught Georgian’s eye when she was little and every year we give it its place in our fridge. The bright red colour comes from a whopping amount of red food colouring, and I try to not think about that evil when my children’s faces are glowing with delight from eating it.
If you’d like to give the dye-free home-made version a try, this is the recipe that had the best reviews!
I found some all-natural red velvet recipes that use beet purée, lemon juice, and real cocoa (not the dutch processed stuff) to achieve that rich red hue. But unless you are a baker (and I am not!) the instructions were intense. But if you are talented when it comes to the baked good, click the link above to make the healthy version, and share the results with us! 🙂
Jackson says, “That looks good and yummy!”
Cody says, “The recipe looks kind of hard but I would like it!”
Dustin says, “I like how it’s called red velvet cake because red is my favourite colour.”
Brody wants to know, “How is your trip to Florida, and how is that cake?”
Benson says, “I liked how they stopped at Savannah because I have a friend named Savanna.” Dustin also has a cousin named Savanna.
JACKSON: It IS good and yummy!
CODY: You can buy it, or make it from a box recipe… but there’s lots of red dye in it. The healthy version is hard to make.
DUSTIN: I like red too. But my favourite colour is purple!
BRODY: My trip is going great, thank you for asking! And the cake is my favourite cake in the world!
BENSON: That’s funny that you know two people named Savannah! Savannah is in Georgia. And Georgia is almost like my sister Georgian. And Savannah sounds like Soumana, who is my friend in Mali, Africa and we just sent him a soccer ball. 🙂
